Cosmetic Dentistry
We live in a time where, particularly in western cultures, appearance is everything and it is no wonder that cosmetic dentistry is now popular to get that perfect 'Hollywood smile'.
There are various procedures on offer and some of these include whitening, veneers, crowns and white filling.
To whiten the teeth a simple scale and polish from the dental hygienist can work wonders. A lot of dentists offer a combination of tooth whitening at the surgery together with a ready prepared it that you take home to continue the process. These contain trays with contain a certain degree of peroxide to whiten the tooth. These kits provide a permanent whitening of the teeth over a gradual process. The degree of whiteness that you are left with will vary from person to person and obviously depends on what your teeth were like to start with. Some people feel absolutely no side effects from the treatment whereas others report a heightened sensitivity or pain for a period after the treatment finishes.
Veneers are another cosmetic option. They are a 'makeover' for the teeth can hide staining and crooked teeth or gaps in the teeth. The actual veneer is a very thin piece of tooth coloured laminate or porcelain which are adhesively placed on the front of the original tooth. The effect is really very similar to putting false nails on your hands. Porcelain is more expensive but is the most popular choice of material as they are stronger and longer lasting that their alternatives. They last between 5 and 10 years whereas composite veneers only last a year or two. However, it is inevitable that eventually you will need to get the veneers replaced and should one come off its really important that you keep hold of it! Good oral hygiene and regular check ups can make them last the maximum amount of time possible!
Dental crowns are used to repair damaged, cracked or worn teeth. It is possible that you may need crowns if your tooth is fairly decayed and you do not have enough 'good tooth' to support another method of repair. If you have had a root canal treatment a crown is often used to build up the strength of the tooth. A dental crown can be expected to last about 10 to 15 years if you follow good oral hygiene techniques and can cost up to £2000 per tooth.
