The role of a dentist is a not only to care for teeth but also to educate the public about the importance of looking after this area and the correct manner in which to do this. There are only 13 dental schools in the UK and admission is really tough! Candidates are expected to achieve 5 or more A/A* at GCSE and these must include English, Maths and Science. A - Levels should be in at least two science subjects (Biology and Chemistry are preferred). The equivalent of 4 weeks of dental work experience should be undertaken and this should ideally be in a range of dental fields. Candidates must also have an awareness of the future of their dental career and where they see this going.
Cosmetic dentistry is a popular choice for a lot of people these days in the pursuit of that perfect 'Hollywood' smile and treatments such as veneers, crowns and whitening treatments are frequently used.
